So to prevent other gamers getting stuck completely and giving up Haven Moon, I decided to create this guide.

One of the joys of these kind of games is the slow uncovering of secrets, getting to know how everything works and then progress further into the game. In Haven Moon there is only one way to proceed so if you get stuck, there isn't a lot to do. So back then it took quit a while before I really got stuck and needed a guide to proceed. If you got stuck trying to gain acces to one of the ages, or if you got stuck with the puzzles in one of the ages, you could always try another puzzle in the same or in one of the other ages. In the original Myst you could visit several 'ages', each requiring you to solve a puzzle in order to acces them. While I find Haven Moon a good example of how a Myst-like game should be, one of it's drawbacks is it's linearity. As I've mentioned in my review I'm really impressed by this game and I hope we'll see more games by mr. It's the first game he ever created and he was the sole developer. It is inspired by Myst and the stories of Jules Vernes. If you're going to make the plunge into Myst, see it as a preamble to the far superior game in Riven.Haven Moon is a point and click adventuregame created by François Roussel. Riven's 1997 graphics and gameplay still hold up ludicrously well.

Myst was always about story first, puzzles second, and that's why the series and the games have endured so long.Īll that being said, there's a reason why Myst has gone through several face lifts but Riven remains untouched. No, they aren't still good because of nostalgia. The puzzles are still the same but they're easier to grasp and understand with better graphics and better movement. The end result is that realMyst Masterpiece (the latest version) is really the best one because it feels more like the original game but with a huge shot in the arm graphics wise.

RealMyst Mastepiece (2014) Same graphics as realMyst (with a slight upgrade) but gives you the choice between free movement or point and clickīasically the original is not really playable anymore, Myst Masterpiece is fine if you want nostalgia or "to see how badly it's held up", and realMyst just doesn't feel like Myst.

RealMyst (2000) Completely upgraded graphics, completely changed movement structure to free (instead of point and click), and added several things including a new age. Myst Masterpiece (2000) Same game, but graphics updated to tolerable expectations Myst (1993) Ridiculously low resolution and 8-bit colors. The "original Myst", which is hard to find nowadays, does not hold up well. Not sure if I'm too keen on looking around for stuff in the dark with a flashlight having no idea where anything is but the graphics sure look a heck of a lot better. RealMyst is around 4 bucks currently and cheapest I found the Masterpiece Edition was around 11 bucks. I know that whole nostalgia thing can be a bit misleading at times, god knows I've done it before as well. Especially those that may have played one of those versions more recently that haven't played it before. So if any of you have any thoughts on if it is worth it or not please let me know. I like hard, but I don't like impossible or things that make no sense with no rhyme or reason whatsoever.

And you needed an entire house, plus three outdoor areas to search and you literally had no idea what you were even supposed to do next. The game had pretty good reviews but was beyond maddening due to having to find one tiny pixel that a rock was in that without a walkthrough I have no idea how anyone on earth could have found. For example, I played a game called Scratches which is 7 or so years old. So, for those of you that have played Myst, is it worth playing for someone that hasn't ever played it before? I love puzzle games, but sometimes when playing older games, especially games that were almost a first of their kind, they can be extremely frustrating due to elements in the game that were just never thought of at the time. But with the technological advancements that have taken place I have a hard time getting back in to them, if only for even a brief time. For their day, sure, they were brilliant. Now I remember a ton of games from my youth that I found to be amazing only to go back and play them and find that they are awful.

Not the original, but perhaps the newer RealMyst or much more recent RealMyst Masterpiece. While impatiently waiting for the release of The Witness I was thinking of playing Myst.
